December 19, 2024

Workshop for schoolgirls in grades 9-10

Secrets of DNA: In search of clues in biochemistry!

Are you curious about the natural sciences and want to find out more about biochemistry? Then take part in our exciting Girls' Day event! You will become active yourself and carry out an STR analysis. But what exactly is that?

STR stands for “Short Tandem Repeat” and refers to short repetitions of DNA sequences that occur at different frequencies in each person and make us unique. During the analysis, you will examine oral mucosa cells from different people to identify and compare these differences. You will see how these small genetic changes can be used to prove family relationships.

The method is also used in forensic science to identify perpetrators or find relatives. At the end of the event, you will receive a picture of the analyzed DNA - an exciting souvenir of an exciting day!
Come along and discover how exciting and diverse the world of biochemistry is!
